HOSTING COUNTRIES

 

For the first time in history, the organization of the biggest football tournament in the world will be divided between three countries. A total of 16 cities will host the games. Most of them (11) are in the United States: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Boston and New York. The Mexican headquarters will be located in Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City. Finally, the Canadian sites are Vancouver and Toronto.

Also for the first time, the 2026 World Cup will see the participation of 48 teams, 16 more than the last seven editions of the tournament since 1998. The distribution of places by continental confederations has already been announced: 

AFC (Asia): Eight straight places + one for the World Cup 

CAF (Africa): 9 places directly + one for the World Cup 

Concacaf (North and Central America, including the Caribbean): 6 direct seats + 2 match tickets 

CONMEBOL (South America): 6 direct spots + 1 world match 

OFC (Oceania): Standings + 1 world match 

UEFA (Europe): 16 direct matches 

It hasn't been announced yet, but what happens is that the three countries hosting the World Cup automatically qualify (thus using three of the Concacaf slots).

 COMPETITION MODEL 

According to Arsene Wenger, head of FIFA's football development department, FIFA is working on three possible tournament formats for the tournament, which currently has 48 teams. Decisions will be made on the model for the next World Cup and 2023. 

QUALIFIERS

Each continent has the right to define the format of the competition and the time of its qualifying competition.
